On Erasure: The Unerasable Series

In her three works, Hong Kong-born Winnie Soon examines the politics of erasure and censorship in the global online context, analyzing data and highlighting time, unheard voices, and indexical images. “Unerasable Characters II” focuses on the “unsettling” erasure of written Chinese characters, sourced from Weibo, one of China’s biggest social media platforms. Characters flash and disappear and are replaced on screen by others, lending them a sprightly kinetic quality. The result is a hypnotic experience and one is tempted, perhaps in vain, to find meaningful combinations or to piece together narratives using the fleeting disparate characters. Significantly, Soon emphasizes that erasure, however absolute in its intent, does not mean total deletion in the digital ecology—if something is removed on one interface, its marks and traces may still be found elsewhere on the Internet, potentially ad infinitum. The information gathered in “Unerasable Characters III” dates only from 1 December 2019 to 27 February 2020, the beginning of the Covid-19 outbreak. During that time, outbreak-related words were censored. Soon’s web art displays primarily emojis, punctuation, and special characters which flash by horizontally in great speed—culminating in a textual and spatial post-apocalyptic screenscape which is oddly suggestive of drifting unmoored in space. Not only are texts considered sensitive and censored in China, Soon’s “Unerasable Images” centers on one of the most iconic images from the Tiananmen Square Massacre in 1989—popularly known as “Tank Man”—a lone protester holding plastic shopping bags stands defiant in front of a long column of tanks. It is a memorable image that has been reworked numerous times, extending its life on the Internet and beyond, again and again, as though being endlessly rebirthed. Soon’s artwork examines a Lego reconstruction of “Tank Man” and its appearances, erasure, and censorship on more than 300 screen frames, intentionally emptied and whitened out. The decision to spotlight this particular iteration of “Tank Man” is an inspired one, juxtaposing the overwhelming nature of state violence, and historical deletion with the placid innocence of a children’s toy, leaving a haunting and unbearable impression.

Winnie Soon was born and raised in Hong Kong. Winnie is an artist-researcher interested in examining digital censorship, data politics, real-time processing/liveness, invisible infrastructure, and the aesthetics of code. Winnie’s works appeared in museums, galleries, festivals, distributed networks, journal articles, and books. Winnie’s projects have been presented and exhibited internationally, for example at ZKM, RMIT Gallery, The Photographers’ Gallery, Transmediale, Electronic Literature Organization’s Festival, ISEA, Stuttgarter Filmwinter, WRO Media Art Biennale, Roskilde Library, Image Galleri, Si Shang Art Museum, Pulse Art + Technology Festival, FutureEverything Art Exhibition, HK ifva Awards, and Hong Kong Microwave International Media Arts Festival. They have received the Expanded Media Award for Network Culture at Stuttgarter Filmwinter — Festival for Expanded Media, the WRO 2019 Media Art Biennale Award, the Literature in Digital Transformation in 2019, and a Special Mention at the 26th ifva Awards.
